The landmark of Florence is the Santa Maria del Fiore (also known as Florence Cathedral and Dome). It was built in the 14th century and the entire area included the main cathedral, St. John the Baptistery and Giotto Bell Tower. It was named World Heritage in the 18th century.

The main characteristics of the main cathedral is the widely used white marble together red brick dome. It took a hundred years to build and it is currently the largest dome in the world, with a diameter of 43.7 meters and height of 52 meters.

The government had organised a competition for the design of the cathedral and in the end the gold merchant Filippo Brunelleschi won the bid. He used 16 years time to build the structure of the dome. In addition, he built another dome outside of the inner dome to protect it. However, nobody knows how the entire dome was completed and whether it was actually built using the method we described earlier as it was too long time ago.

It is free admission to enter the main cathedral. If you want to visit the dome to see the view of the city, you will need to purchase a package that costs 15 Euros. Apart from the dome, you can also enter St. John the Baptistery and Giotto Bell Tower, the museum and the underground tomb. The package valids for 48 hours and you can only visit each place once. If you want to visit the dome you need to make advanced reservations.

If you want to reach the dome, you need to climb 463 steps. You can see closely the "Last Judgement" drawn by Michelangelo using 10 years of time. You will also be able to see how stunning this piece of architecture is. Even though this building is only 106 feet in height, it is already the tallest building in town. You can see all the neighbouring red bricks houses in the city.

Florence Cathedral and Dome was built in white, red and green marbles. Therefore, it is very stunning. This is the biggest dome in the world. The diameter is 43.7 meters and is 52 meters in height.

You can see the "Last Judgement" from the dome.

The cathedral dome is the tallest building in the city of Florence, overlooking the old town of buildings built in red bricks and roof tiles.
