The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is situated in the new expansion of Barcelona. You can alight at the Sant Pau-Dos de Maig Station on the L5 line and it is just 15 – 20 minutes’ walk from Sagrada Família.

This hospital was actually resulted from the merge of 6 hospitals in town and it has moved to the current site in 1905. The current building was designed by the famous architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and was finished in 1930. Gaudi ran into a car accident and was sent to this hospital to rescue, and he died 3 days later.

In 2009, all the different functions of the hospital have moved to a new site and this place has been renovated and opened to the public afterwards.

The special architectural feature is the symmetrical design and there are different buildings, all linked by underground walkways.

The design of this hospital was in the Catalan art Nouveau style. It has used a large amount of red bricks, mosaic and colourful windows. This helps to ensure enough sunlight in the hospital and has further enhanced the atmosphere of the hospital.

This special building was declared in 1997 as World’s Heritage and only 1 of the 4 buildings in the complex is opened to the public for viewing now.

The hospital has the exhibition area as well as Operation Theatre with a lot of windows that are opened to the public. You can also visit the central garden as well as the ward and the Administration Building. Inside the ward, you can find circular rooftop as well as the tiles with rose pattern and the hospital logo.

You can walk inside the former Administration Building, where it contained the office, file room as well as the doctor’s room and reception area. All of them had become the office of the Organization which is running this site. You can also find some 15 -20th century history books. In the main area of the building you will find some Roman architectural features with tall columns and pink marble. Of special note is the colourful rooftop on top of the circular staircase.
